We have heard for locking the crankshaft  you can use a drill bit in the flange on the block to insert into the fly wheel.

NOTE: OEM Instructions for the 1.9L Diesel will tell you that you need to remove the engine and transmission to do the timing on this car. This is an option; however you can actually lock the crankshaft through the flywheel like a BMW.
